The Principality of Caelvenne

Caelvennois

1. How It Sounds

Quick and liquid. Stress falls on the last syllable. Words run together, so a Caelvennois sentence is one long sound with the meaning somewhere in the middle. Solvaine speaks it fast; the vineyard shore speaks it slower. It is the language of people who are never quite saying what they mean, and know it.

Letters Sound Example
a as in father vra (a)
e as in bed; a final -e after a consonant is silent maive (but): say mayv**
é ay, stressed nervile
è as in bed, held long zève (seven)
ô a long oh vôme (through)
i as in machine quion (who)
ou as in soup nount (we)
au as in aura aul (and)
ai as in aisle maive (but)
eu uh with rounded lips teul (you, friend)
ie, io, ia two quick vowels, ee-eh, ee-oh, ee-ah jio (I), viau (yes)
j like the s in pleasure jio (I)
ch as in ship chalone (noble house)
c k, before a, o, u, l and r clauve (sun)
qu k; at the start of a word only in question words quar (where)
ll a long l fiallin (just)
gn ny, as in canyon pogni (follow)
z z; the plural -z is written but never spoken lioz (the, plural)

Question words all begin with qu-: quène (what), quion (who), quial (which), quar (where), quaun (when), quive (why), quame (how). No other word does.

2. How It Works

Pronoun Word Owner ("of")
I, me jio diol jio
you, intimate teul diol teul
you, formal vaume diol vaume
he, him (and masculine things) eul diol eul
she, her (and feminine things) eume diol eume
we, us nount diol nount
they, them zount diol zount

Counting is base ten with a zero; the Caelvennois took Zarvand's figures in 421 and call them the ledger figures. siale, bove, fiane, glaure, saive, scolle, zève, huive, nioze, dinve (one to ten). Tens are built: bovedinve (twenty), fianedinve (thirty). Then vailol (hundred) and tiosa (thousand).

Names. Given names are soft and long: men's end in -ien or -aud, women's in -ine or -elle, built on a word (Lourien, from lourté, light). A noble adds diol and the house: Lourien diol Valcroix. Merchants use the house name alone (Bansine Farisel); everyone else, a trade or a town. Every great house also has a mirror-name, ètinvime, spoken only at the Mirror Vow and never written.
