The Waheli

Waheli

1. How It Sounds

Whispered. Waheli has no hard k, g, b or p at all: the only stops are a soft t and d, so it can be spoken in a hunting-blind without carrying. Stress falls on the first syllable, and the ends of words trail off. A Waheli raising their voice is either dying or killing. Outsiders say it sounds like wind in a redwood; the Waheli say outsiders sound like falling trees.

Letters Sound Example
a, e, i, o, u as in father, bed, machine, go, rule ovein (all)
ae, ei as in eye, vein yihei (these)
th as in thin thirwe (this)
w as in wood wismes (most)
v, f as in vine, fern voth (in)
l light, as in leaf lifen (that)
r lightly tapped thirwe (this)
sh as in hush; question words only at the start shilas (where)

Question words all begin with sh-: shothif (what), shereth (who), shethu (which), shilas (where), shedand (when), shesei (why), shiwel (how). No other word does.

2. How It Works

Counting: theth, weith, thand, yarwith, newen, onraf, melvaf, thisin, nafur, neyof (one to ten). weithneyof (twenty, "two-ten"); misnael (hundred); weru (thousand).

Names. A Waheli child's true name is carved on a strip of name-bark and buried at a redwood's root; it is never said aloud. What outsiders hear is a use-name, a plain Waheli word, sometimes clipped: Maesra (from maesrande, small brown bird), Elder Wiroll (thorn-tree), Viwal Stainhand (reaper). English by-names are added for readers (Stainhand, of the Edge).

3. Phrases
