Nhal River Villages

The river villages along the Nhal, about twenty thousand Tzalan led by the elder Chelpan and his River Council, who want trade on fair terms and small garrisons. They keep a standing peace with the Bitter-Bark Keepers and the Mud-Eaters against both Sutzam and the outsiders' forts, and they feud with the Serpent Clans over Ixatl's fire. Villagers carve canoes from kapok trees and eat river turtles' eggs.
