Slopes of the Five Clans

The inhabited slopes of the Cinder Teeth, divided among the five Hizkari clans: the Matron's own, the Seep-Keepers at the naphtha seeps, the Swift-Nesters of the cliffs who gather the cinder swifts' nests, the Ash-Shepherds with their black goats on the ash-grass, and the Vent-Walkers of the hot tunnels. Hizkari of age lay a hand on a lava-warm stone for as long as they can bear, and the scar is the clan's mark. They say that if the swifts leave the cliffs, you should leave the cliffs.
