The Hrodvald Clanholds

The Frostmarch, from the north Spine to the northeast coast, centered on Lake Farvig: some two million people and, in theory, thirty thousand warriors. It is a loose confederation of clans, each under a war chieftain (stelest), who meet every summer at the Vuvud at Krasvuv and in time of war or famine elect a Hearthking; Selra Stormbrand was elected in 1144, the first woman in a century, and Stelest Kruman Ironjaw walked out. The clans sent no envoy to the Accord of Surmave and have never signed it, and since the Frostmarch Concord of 877 a killing is supposed to be paid for in silver, not blood, which is honored about half the time. The Hrodvald live by furs, whale oil, amber, walrus ivory, bog iron, dried fish, raiding and mercenary service, trade in hacksilver and gold arm-rings, and build in timber: longhouses, turf roofs, dragon-prow gables and palisade forts, with almost no stone. They worship the Old Ones: Selthar the storm-father, the Ice Mother, and the wolf and raven spirits.
