The Taiga

The pine forest of the Frostmarch, which gives the Hrodvald their longship keels and longhouse posts from the taiga pine, along with dark frost spruce and white Farrur birch. The giant Farvig elk is hunted here on skis, the fearless taiga glutton will fight a bear for a carcass, and the black capercaillie is a chieftain's feast bird. In summer biting midges and frost mosquitoes drive the elk mad, and in dry years the bark beetle kills whole stands. The first longship, the story goes, was a whale carved from a taiga pine.
